पताका हस्त अइगुल्यःकुञ्चिताङ्गुष्टा संश्लिष्टाः प्रसृता यदि |
स पताककर: प्रोक्तोनृत्यकर्म विशारदैः ||
Pataka mudra is a common hand gesture in Kathak. It is formed by keeping all fingers straight and together while bending the thumb slightly inward. It is used to represent clouds, air, water, a river, a flag, or a blessing.
अरालहस्ततो भिन्ना तर्जन्या भ्रुकुटीक्रिया | शुकतुण्डः करः प्रोक्तो मुनिभिः नाट्यशास्त्रिणः ||
Shukatunda mudra mimics a parrot’s beak, formed by hooking the index finger, slightly bending the thumb, and extending other fingers. It symbolizes a parrot, shooting an arrow, or a fierce expression.
अस्यैवचापिहस्तस्य तर्जनीच कनिष्ठिका बाहे :प्रसारित द्वे च स करः कर्तरीमुखः ||
Kartarimukha mudra, resembling scissors, symbolizes separation, lightning, disagreement, or eye movement by bending little and ring fingers, stretching index and middle fingers.
स एव मयूरः स्याद् अङ्गुष्ठानामिकास्पृशः ||
Mayura mudra resembles a peacock. It is formed by touching the tip of the ring finger to the tip of the thumb while keeping the other fingers extended. It is used to depict a peacock, applying tilak, sprinkling water, or something noble.
स एव त्रिपताकः स्याद्वकितानामिकाङ्गुलिः ||
Tripataka mudra is formed by bending the ring finger while keeping the other fingers straight. It represents a crown, tree, thunderbolt, flame, or arrow, symbolizing power, nature, energy, or direction in classical Indian dance.
अर्धचन्द्रकरः सोऽयं पताकेऽङ्गुष्ठसारणात् ||
Ardhachandra mudra resembles a half-moon. It is formed by keeping the thumb straight and apart from the other fingers, which are kept together. It is used to represent the moon, a spear, touching someone’s head, or meditation.
