Odissi, a classical dance form from the eastern state of Odisha in India

Originating in the historic temples of Odisha, India, Odissi dance is an enthralling classical dance style that skillfully combines intricate movements, spirituality, and storytelling into a visual symphony. Odissi is a dance of devotion that has its origins in the Puri temples of Lord Jagannath. It is frequently regarded as a kind of worship expressed through the beautiful language of movement.

Odissi dancers, renowned for their elegant stances and sculpture-like poses, produce a visual poetry that captures the rich cultural legacy of Odisha. The tribhangi, a unique three-part stance that gives the body a smooth yet controlled curvature, is highly valued in this dance style. This produces an enthralling rhythmic tapestry, combined with the dynamic footwork.

The repertoire of Odissi dance includes both abhinaya, which is an expressive storytelling element, and nritta, which are pure dance sequences that highlight the dancer's technical prowess. The dancers tell mythological stories, many of which are taken from the epics of Hindu mythology, using intricate footwork, bhavas (facial expressions), and mudras (hand gestures).

The accompanying music for Odissi is a classical Odissi style, featuring instruments such as the mardala, flute, and sitar. The dance is made more complex and richer by the melodic songs and rhythmic beats, which also improve the visual experience as a whole.
